Description

NGC 5054 Spiral Galaxy

This photo by me and my dad the same night as [link]

Pleases see that photo for more info on equipment etc.

I promised you guys this, so here it is. It's not as sharp as the m-51, however this galaxy is much further away. At a distance of 82 million light years, and a magnitude of 10.7, it is quite a good photo. If you notice the blur on the lower right of the frame, that is another galaxy named MCG-3-34-40 with a magnitude of 16 (magnitudes are exponential similar to earthquakes, ie. a magnitude 2 is not twice as much as a magnitude 1, it is much more, the higher the magnitude the dimmer. Most stars you can see with your naked eye are magnitude 4 and below depending on where you live.)

ALSO, notice 2 gray streaks, I cropped this image so you can only see 1 and half of another. The first gray streak (above the galaxy) is an astroid, the other (to the left of the galaxy) is another astroid. Both were discovered durring this shot. I cropped the image so you can't see all the other deep-sky objects in the photo. However you still can see other galaxies if you look hard enough.

Thanks to Adam Block over at Kitt Peak.
